“Rzeszow Cellars” Underground Tourist Route

Rzeszow, endowed with civic rights under Magdeburg Law in 1354, received a number of privileges, which enabled its development and led to a dynamic expansion in trade. For many years the trade fairs was one of the major attractions of the city. Warehouses became vital for the merchants who had to store their products. The location of Rzeszow and its defensive walls that surrounded this medieval city protected the storage buildings that were located near small properties like houses, workshops, breweries and stables.

FEATURES, ORIGINS, VALUES AND LEGAL PROTECTION
The cellars dug into the loess soil supplemented the existing storage facilities. In all certainty, it can be assumed that during wars, invasions and the plundering of the city, which took place throughout the ages, the basements also served as shelters for the residents of the city. Some of the basements, especially ones on the first level, lying directly beneath the buildings, have been called “Underground Shops” are open to the public. These underground shops were also being used successfully in the 20th century, the last one only closed in 1970. With the slow decline in trade, many of the basements become unusable. Those that were on the first and second level, were clogged with garbage and debris, or simply had just been abandoned. In many cellars, the entrances were also walled up. The devastated and unmaintained cellars become a major threat for the Market Square. Water leaking from pipes and sewers loosened the earth, which lead to the destabilisation of the basement structures and consequently to building catastrophes. The process of stabilization of the basements was carried out in the years between 1960 and 1967, under the supervision of Professor Feliks Zalewski from the Academy of Mining and Steelworks in Krakow. The cellars beneath the southern and eastern section of the Market Square and Ul Mickiewicza were filled in with sand and the foundations of the buildings in this area were also been strengthened. Conservation works were resumed in 1977 as part of a comprehensive campaign to save and protect the old city centre. The last stages of securing and modernization of the rest of the Market Square was completed between 2006 and 2007 which resulted in the underground route being expanded by further sites. There are numerous exhibits relating to the history of the city along the Underground Tourist Route.
