Paczków city walls of the 14th century

General

Unit type:

Very well-preserved medieval city walls, even 7 metres high, built of rubble, surround the city with a regular oval of 1200 metres. It is because of the defensive walls that Paczków is known as the "Polish Carcassonne".

In the past the walls reached 9 metres. There were embedded half-shell towers, of which 19 survived to this day (previously there were 24). Their appearance is diverse - some are as high as the wall, others clearly higher. Many of them have numerous embrasures.

Repairs and thorough clean up of fortifications were made in the 19th century. In 1846 remains of the outer wall were demolished, and a year later the buildings and gate bridges. Moat was filled, creating a city park in its place.
