Kazimierz Biskupi - St. Marcin's Church

General

Unit type:

St. Marcin's church that was erected in the place of the hermitage of St. Mateusz's - one of the Five Martyr Brothers.

St. Marcin's church that was erected in the place of the hermitage of St. Mateusz's - one of the Five Martyr Brothers. The origins of the temple date back to the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. The church was reconstructed thrice. The reconstruction that followed the fire in the beginning of the 18th century has erased many of Romanesque and Gothic features. In the 19th century, the temple was extended in the western direction. The original entrance was discovered during restoration works in 1999. The remains of the Romanesque portal in the southern part of the temple were unearthed at that time. Above the portal, in the fragment of Gothic wall, is Godziemba – the coat of arms of the Lubrański family who owned the Kazimierz estate in the 16th century, when the first reconstruction of the temple took place. All three reconstructions are easily visible in the outside walls.
