It is a modern museum presenting the collections on the history and presence of Gdynia, the rural development, the town and the harbor with particular emphasis on the importance of the city and port centre during the period of the Second Republic of Poland (1920-1939).

The museum organizes the exhibitions of the old times artists as well as the retrospective overviews of works of the contemporary artists from the Country and from abroad. The museum has two divisions: in the former residence house of the Skwiercz family, so called House of Abraham, and in the Gemini Entertainment Centre. The temporary exhibitions are organized there.

The Museum of Gdynia was established by the President of the town on 01.01.1983, and the opening of the new building took place on 16.11.2007 with the participation of the President of Poland, Lech Kaczynski. The new building has five floors, on which there are stores of the exhibits, the conservation laboratories, a library and a reading room, an audiovisual room, the exhibition rooms and the art gallery. For the various forms of the exhibition activities there is a surface of approximately 1750 square metres designated. The museum's collection counts over 56 thousands of exhibits, including: paintings, graphics, sculptures, fabrics, medals, maps and plans, photographs and postcards, clothing, furniture and the artifacts. The museum’s library has a collection of more than 9 thousands volumes.
