SYNAGOGUE

General

Unit type:

The Synagogue is one of the most beautiful Jewish temples of the Renaissance in Poland.

It was built around 1610 in the style of the late Renaissance. The main part is created by the prayer hall which was large (11.5 x 12.2 m). The vault of the room was formed as a mazer with contoured ribs. Still in the seventeenth century, two women galleries were built. During the German occupation the Synagogue had been significantly damaged. The north women gallery (arcades) was damaged, and the southern gallery was completely destroyed. The interior of the synagogue was robbed of the liturgical equipment. After the liberation, the building was completely renovated, including the reconstruction of the southern women's gallery. In the seventies of the twentieth century in the frame of the renovation of this property the attics were restored, the stucco decorations were maintenaned and the polychrome paintings were unveiled.
