Sanctuary of the Motherhoodof the Blessed Virgin Mary in Dziekanowice

General

Unit type:

“Old” parish Church of St. Nicholas and St. Magdalene in its current form could arise during the period between the XI and XII centuries.

Conducted in 1957 studies of the walls of the Church led to the discovery of polychrome derived from the second half of the twelfth century. Similar paintings from this period have been found in Poland in three places. This Church was not sufficient for the growing parish. Many times there were made attempts to build a new Church. Finally it was allowed to a pastor, a former prisoner of the Stalinist period, to construct a new temple. Right next to it there was built a large temple dedicated to the Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to which moved what they could from the existing historic Church. In 1966 Millenijnym Priest Archbishop Karol Wojtyla dedicated a new temple as a votive of gratefulness for a thousand years of the Christian faith in the Polish lands. Since then, the beautiful, historic Church ceased to be used and began the process of destruction.
