Church of St. John the Baptist in Łosiów

General

Unit type:

On one of the highest elevations of Brest land (181 m AMSL) there is a Baroque Church of St. John the Baptist. The mention of it dates from 1255. Initially owned by the Knights Hospitaller.

From 1207 to 1810 it was the seat of komturship of the Knights of Malta. The present Church was built in 1703-1731. Despite the reconstruction, the Gothic walls have been preserved.

Inside the Church there are Baroque furnishings and trompe l'oeil murals, as well as a number of Maltese crosses.

Near the Church there is a stone Baroque figure of St. John of Nepomuk (1709), one of the oldest in Silesia. At the Church fence, a commemorative plaque was set in 1999 with the inscription: He who considers the past doubles his life, signed by residents of Łosiowo and the surrounding areas.
