The Training Mine of the Municipal Museum “Sztygarka”

The Training Mine of the National Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in Dabrowa Gornicza is aimed at familiarizing students with the mining equipment. The construction of the mine started in 1927 and the first phase was completed in 1929.

FEATURES, ORIGINS, VALUES AND LEGAL PROTECTION
The mines excavations had a total length of about 250m and had the character of an adit. The mining operations performed in the years between 1958 and 1966 consisted of increasing the size of the excavations as well as completing the work to make the mine safe. The practical work of mining students was carried out in the Training Mine till 1994 and after the end of its “role as a school” the mine became much neglected and the passages became flooded with water. The technical condition of the mine became enough of a threat to life, that it was closed down. The issue arose how to save this valuable building for the city. Custody over the adit was taken over by the Dabrowa Municipal Museum “Sztygarka”.
The perfectly preserved coal excavations, passageways and machinery became a tourist attraction for both domestic and foreign tourists as everything here looks like a real mine. The narrow, winding corridors that stretch for several hundred metres, the machinery and the exhibits are designed to bring visitors in touch with the traditions of mining.
Since January of this year, the Training Mine has been open to the public to explore the underground tourist route. The route covers about 650 metres of workings on three separate levels. Above the entrance to the facility there is a notice board with information about the facility and also about the historical affiliation of the mine.
The Training Mine of the Municipal Museum “Sztygarka” is an interesting and unique facility as the natural condition and appearance of its training workings has been preserved. This unique character and atmosphere have been recognised by the authorities of the Silesian Province by including the Training Mine on the Trail of Industrial Monuments of the Silesian Province on 26th October 2010.
