The Orochowe Lake Nature Reserve

General

Unit type:

A very interesting peat bog reserve, where we can admire one of the few dystrophic lakes outside of the Polesie area.

The Orochowe Lake Nature Reserve is a peat bog reserve protecting vascular plants (downy willow, three species of sundews, swamp willow). Founded in 1996, it takes up an area of 58.03 ha. The water tank is a distrophic lake, that is a lake in tha last stage of aging. This process occurs due to fast overgrowing. The water becomes russet, heavily acidified, with minimum amount of oxygen. In the lake little oxygen cannot cause decomposition of a lot of plant remains, and so the tank overgrows. Plant remains are the foundation of peat bogs, both high and transitional. The Reserve documented 23 rare and protected plant species in the area.
