Synagogue in Szydłów

General

Unit type:

Within the city walls, near the market, a Renaissance synagogue survived. It is a structure that represents a unique historical value. In the bright and spacious interior of the synagogue there is a carved Torah ark (altar cabinet) and gently ribbed ceiling.

Building with two-meter stone walls, reinforced with buttresses could act as defence. From the outside, it is decorated only with a simple attic, which contrasts with a wooden outhouse with shingled roof. Here, the upper floor housed the women's gallery, where women prayed. In the bright and spacious interior of the synagogue there is a carved Torah ark (altar cabinet) and gently ribbed ceiling.
Currently it houses a gallery of contemporary painting - paintings by local artists with architectural motifs of Szydłów. One can also buy small judaica souvenirs. In the synagogue one can see artefacts related to Jewish culture, especially religious objects and books, two pieces of Torah scrolls, and a 4-meter high statue of Moses holding the tablets of the Decalogue, and 18 reliefs in bronze depicting scenes from the Old Testament by Polish sculptor, Professor Gustaw Zemła.
Similar to Chmielnik, there are popular events held here connected with Jewish culture. During the events there are open-air exhibitions, concerts and poetry readings.
