The museum was founded in 1964, on the 100th anniversary of Stefan Żeromski’s birthday. The founder was a museum curator Aleksandra Dobrowolska, the initiator of biographical and literary museums in Świętokrzyskie region.

Between the 13th century cathedral and the seminary, to the left of the Cracow Bishops' Palace, there is a two-story building, now the seat of the court, the museum and a library. Even 40 years ago, the building housed a school with an over 250-year-long tradition. The school which was attended by Walery Przyborowski, Boleslaw Prus, Gustaw Herling-Grudziński and Stefan Żeromski.
From the end of the 18th century, it was a place where future officials, doctors and entrepreneurs working in the Staropolski Region met. High school, the only school that provided education for men in a radius of several kilometres. For the locals it was a source of income, for the police a source of reports, and for the citizens of Kielce - a place of scandal. Kielce high school, however, was primarily a centre of thought and culture, often having effect on the whole future life of its graduates.
Museum of Stefan Żeromski School Years - the beginnings of the permanent exhibition are associated with the Museum of Świętokrzyskie, which was established at the Cracow Bishops' Palace, located not far from the former headquarters of the high school. Museum of Świętokrzyskie kept some memorabilia gathered earlier in connection with an exhibition devoted to the writer presented in Kielce in 1950-1955. Grand opening of the new facility - the Museum of Stefan Żeromski School Years was in 1965 The exhibition focuses on the period of writer's adolescence, first literary attempts, study in "cleric" school and documentation of first editions of novels, and the legacy of the manuscripts.

The museum has all first editions of Żeromski’s novels, some are now rarities, numerous decorative and art editions, with vignettes, illustrations, bound in leather, signed by Żeromski, as well as several works with dedications.
