FEATURES, ORIGINS, VALUES AND LEGAL PROTECTION
The Basilica Cathedral, dedicated to the apostles St Peter and St Paul, is located on the island of Ostrow Tumski in Poznan and dates back to the very origins of Christianity in Poland in the second half of the 10th century. At the time a church, dedicated to St Peter, was built on this spot which was the residence of the first bishop in Poland.
The Gothic structure of the Cathedral was erected at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries on the site of the several times rebuilt Roman temple. Rebuilt several times the cathedral survived till the Second World War. In 1945, after suffering severe damage, it underwent comprehensive renovation which restored its Gothic appearance.
A part of the underground tour route begins in the crypt under the south tower where there are exposed remains of the Romanesque cathedral, baptistery and the tombs of the first Polish kings. An immense granite fragment of the Romanesque wall can be seen incorporated in the south wall of the tower. Running around the excavation there is a small gallery that leads to the lapidary beneath the western part of the presbytery where small pieces of stonework (tombstones and epitaph plaques) have been exposed along with the decorative interior elements.
The second crypt is a burial crypt which holds the remains of church dignitaries.
