Castle in Malbork

General

Enhedstype:

It is considered one of the greatest architectural attractions of Poland. It houses a very interesting museum with impressive collections that are associated with the castle.

The Teutonic castle in Malbork is one of the best known tourist attractions in Poland. Visitors that come here are interested in the Middle Ages and in the construction and architecture of the Teutonic Knights. It is the largest fortress of its type in Europe. The castle was built between the second half of the 13th century and the middle of the 15th century. Regarded as impregnable it had the role, between 1309 and 1466, as the headquarters of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order and the religious capital of the state.

Originally, the three sections of the castle in Malbork, the Low Castle, the Middle Castle and the High Castle, covered an area of about 20 hectares where, apart from the powerful fortification structures, the entire infrastructure was created which was required for the functioning of the Grand Masters residence and also the administrative centre of the entire state.

After numerous destructions, two restorations and a partial reconstruction at the end of the 19th century and after World War II, the High Castle, the Middle Castle and many original fragments of the Low Castle have survived to this day. It is worth exploring the Castle Tower and also the main chapel which is the castle’s largest room. The castle museum is also worth a visit.
