Former Franciscan Church and Monastery in Chęci

General

Enhedstype:

Former Franciscan Church and Monastery was founded by Casimir the Great in 1368.

Temple is built of brick, and the monastery was built as a wooden building. At the time of the Reformation it housed a Calvinist Church.

The Church was recovered after 15 years. The renovations greatly expanded it e.g. with cloisters and the chapel of St. Leonard. After 1605, the staroste of Branice expanded the buildings, giving them the present appearance. Before 1581, the chapel of Branicki family was built. Destroyed during the Swedish wars and rebuilt by staroste of Bidzin in 1685, it carried out its sacred function until dissolution in 1817. After the fall of the November Uprising of 1830, until 1928 it was a prison, then schools, and even a holiday house. In March 1991, it was again put in command of Franciscans. The whole building is maintained in the Gothic style, in spite of numerous modifications.
