St. Anne pilgrimage Church

General

Enhetstyp:

St. Anne pigrimage Church, a branch Church, located outside the city, now in the cemetery. The first mention of the chapel built here dates from 1444 and is associated with the legend...

The most valuable monument of the Church was a winged altarpiece, so-called Triptych from the workshop of Veit Stoss. The main place of the altar include Saint Anne with the family of Our Lady, surrounded by the founders of the Church and Olesno town councillors. Four scenes on the wings of the altar: Annunciation, Visitation, birth of Jesus Christ and Adoration of the Magi. Altar was robbed in 1994 and only fragments of the triptych have been recovered until now. The Church also holds Gothic sculptures of Anna selbdritt and Pieta.

Around the Church there is a cemetery used even today. The oldest tombs date back to the 17th century. There are interesting gravestones inscriptions containing typical Polish names inscribed in Gothic script. Borderland region of Silesia was always a place of intermingling Polish and German cultures. There are also preserved neo-Gothic pillars of the old cemetery fence made of brick, and inside those lower ones with the Stations of the Cross.
