Jewish Cemetery

General

Enhetstyp:

The new jewish cemetery was founded in 1896. Old macebas and mortuary with an exhibition dedicated to the Jews of Kalisz are situated there.

The old jewish cemetery existed since 1287. It was located between present-day streets Skalmierzycka, Handlowa and Nowy Swiat and destroyed by Nazis during World War II. The new one came into being when the old one began to overfill. During World War II mass executions of Poles took place there. Well-kept macebas, digged from riverbed of rypinkowski canal, were embed into brick wall, on the inner side of cemetery. The oldest macebas come from XV and XVI century. In 2001 Tahara, pre-war mortuary, was renovated and pictures and relics of the Jewish Community of Kalisz are exhibited there. Currently the cemetery is under management of the Jewish Commune from Wroclaw.
