Can be considered as one of the world’s most interesting mines of striped flint

This archeological museum and nature reserve near Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski, covering an area of about 80 hectares, is the largest Neolithic mine complex of banded flint in Europe. The old mines were discovered in 1922. Within an area measuring over 4km in length and between 20m and 220m wide there have been found nearly 4000 such mines where flint was extracted between 3500 and 1600 BC.

The flint excavated from the mines was shaped into items similar to axe heads, chisels and other tools. These products were then traded and as a result were distributed to all parts of Central Europe. Currently, on the site is a reconstruction of one of the old mines, a stone works and a Neolithic village covering an area of 1.5 hectares.

The mine has a 500m long underground route, reaching a depth of 11.5m. This tourist trail in Krzemionki is the only one of its kind in the world which is open to a wider audience. There are also remarkable exhibits showing „Neolithic Methods of Flint Mining” and „Stone Age Mining Settlements”.
