Coal Mine in Nowa Ruda

The underground tourist route in the “Nowa Ruda” Mine that lies in the former “Piast” mining field in Nowa Ruda shows the rich and more than 500-year old history and tradition of coal mining in the Nowa Ruda region, the oldest coal mining area of Poland.

FEATURES, ORIGINS, VALUES AND LEGAL PROTECTION
Included in the tourist route are:
- The Museum Building, with exhibition halls containing artefacts from all phase of underground mining and the original control room which was the central point of information and mine traffic control.
- The historic complex of architectural and Industrial surface facilities from the coal and refractory slate mines, which is dominated by the unique, on a global scale, pit furnaces and rotary kilns that had been used for more than 100 years for roasting refractory slate. The complex is completed by the mineshaft towers from the 1870’s.
- Underground mined excavations stretching about 700m with secured tunnels that have been excavated from the natural rock whilst retaining their original character and show off all the production processes associated with deep coal mining. One of the highlights of this part of the route is a ride on a genuine mining train.
Is a diamond originally coal? When was coal green? How did the forest turn into coal?
These questions will be answered whilst visiting the Coal Mine in Nowa Ruda, oldest mine in Poland and one of the oldest in the world.
