Church of St. Martin (Kościół św. Marcina)

General

Enhetstyp:

Founded in 14th century it has been repeatedly reconstructed in the Baroque style. The church played a resistance role in the 1970s and 80s, as it was a place where opposition members gathered.

The church is located on Piwna Street, which is the longest street in the Old Town, with a length is 250 m. Founded in 1356 by the Duke of Mazovia Ziemowit and his wife Euphemia, it has been repeatedly reconstructed in the Baroque style. The last modification was made in the 18th century, under the direction of architect Karol Bay, who designed, among other inspired designs, a wonderful 'heaving' facade. The late Baroque interior was completely destroyed in 1944, and after the war, it was not rebuilt. Currently, the interior is largely modern, with the only surviving element being a partially burned crucifix hung on a pillar in the main nave. The church played a resistance role in the 1970s and 80s, as it was a place where opposition members gathered.
